Kalamazoo State Theatre

Since the State Theatre opened its doors on July 14, 1927 as a movie palace and Vaudeville house, it has been a fixture in the heart of downtown. In 1985, Hinman purchased, renovated, and reopened the theatre doors. Today the State Theatre still stands as a Kalamazoo landmark, hosting concerts, comedy, and community rentals.

Historic

The State Theatre was built by Colonel William Butterfield of the W.S. Butterfield Theater Chain in 1927. It was designed by world-renowned architect John Eberson, who was famous for bringing an atmospheric movie experience to his theatres.

Atmospheric

The interior of the Kalamazoo State Theatre is designed to resemble an ornate Spanish courtyard; the walls are reminiscent of building facades, and the ceiling is painted dark blue with twinkling stars.

Community Focus

Preserving local history is important and this is done by keeping the community engaged. For this reason the Kalamazoo State Theatre strives to present diverse programming that is relevant to our community.
