What is a CERTIFIED PROPERTY MANAGER?

A Certified Property Manager® (CPM®) is a real estate professional designation awarded by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and recognized by the National Association of Realtors® (NAR®). It is considered to be one of the industry’s most prestigious real estate management designations. The CPM designation signifies years of experience, education and expert knowledge of managing large property portfolios.

IREM is an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors®, serving as an international organization for all real estate management professionals, including both multi-family and commercial industries. IREM’s teachings revolve around the ideals of good management, ethical business practices, and sharing of knowledge. There are approximately 8,000 professionals who hold the CPM designation world-wide.1 These designees are members of one of the eighty IREM chapters in the United States or thirteen chapters internationally.2

He or she will then complete courses in Real Estate Marketing, Leadership, Human Resources, Asset Management, Ethics, and Finance, as well as create a management plan for a subject property. Once completed, the individual is required to keep membership on a local and national level with IREM and the NAR®.3 Additionally, he or she must abide by the strictest code of ethics in the industry, or risk losing the designation.
